Adding Personality to Your Home

Adding your own personality to your home is the main ingredient to great design. Your new furniture is beautiful and comfortable. The paint colour is exactly what you’d envisioned. The accessories and art provide the finishing touch.

So why does it feel like something’s missing? The reality is that even the most picture-perfect interiors can fall flat without one key ingredient: personality. If your house doesn’t reflect your unique style and perspective, it will never quite feel like home.

Whether you’ve just moved into a new space or you’re looking to refresh your current one, personality is the magic sauce that makes it truly yours. If you’re struggling to find ways to add personality to your decor, here’s a few of my go-to tricks go find your unique style.

Embrace Colour

One of the easiest ways to add personality to your home is through colour. For inspiration, think about the colours you naturally gravitate toward in your wardrobe, artwork, or nature. Do you love calming neutrals, bold jewel tones, or soft pastels?

Designer Tip: Find a jumping off point for your colour palette. Anything with colours you love can work – think artwork, throw pillows, or even a patterned tea towel!

Layer Pattern and Texture

Textures and patterns bring depth and visual interest to a room. By mixing different fabrics, materials, and designs, you can add character and make your home feel more lived-in and personalized.

Designer Tip: Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. Just be sure to keep a consistent colour scheme to avoid visual chaos.

Showcase Treasured Items

Your home should tell your story. One of the best ways to reflect your personality is by incorporating artwork, photography, and collectibles that hold special meaning to you. Whether it’s a collection of prints from your travels, family photos, or a sculpture you love, these pieces can transform a room into a personal gallery.

Designer Tip: Be selective. Overloading your walls and shelves with too many items can make your space feel cluttered.

Incorporate Custom Elements

What better way to inject personality into your space than items that are custom-designed for you? When you have furniture, cabinetry, and accessories tailor-made for your unique needs and preferences, your space becomes a true reflection of your personality.

Designer Tip: Custom window treatments are my favourite way to add warmth and personality to my clients’ homes. They instantly elevate your space in a way that store-bought curtains can’t match.

Leave the Idea of Perfection Behind

Perfection is the enemy of personality! Small imperfections make your home feel authentic and lived-in. Making things “perfect” often results in a space that feels more like a bland furniture showroom than a welcoming retreat. Often, the most charming spaces are the ones with a mix of old and new, polished and raw, structured and whimsical.

Designer Tip: When it comes to furniture, you don’t have to purchase the matching set. Try combining complementary pieces that you love for a more interesting look.

Make Your Home Uniquely Yours

Your home should be a sanctuary where you feel comfortable, inspired, and truly at home. From choosing the right colours to curating art, layering textures, and incorporating meaningful pieces, each decision you make should echo your personal tastes and values.

During my design process, I learn as much as I can about my clients’ lifestyle, values, and
favourite things. It’s what gives me the inspiration for unique ways to infuse their space with
personality.

Does your home need an injection of personality? I’d love to help bring your space to life!
